Highway connecting Bangkok to south reopens after bridges collapsed

The highway that links Bangkok with 14 of the southern provinces reopened today after being completely closed for over 12 hours when two bridges along the road in Prachuap Khiri Khan collapsed due to flooding.

The Phetkasem Highway reopened to traffic at 6am today after the highway office sent two emergency Bailey bridges to allow motorists to pass until the permanent bridges can be repaired.

The Bailey bridges have been placed over damaged sections of the road in Ban Wang Yao and Ban Nong Yaplong, reported Thai PBS.

Because the emergency bridges are not meant to support freight trucks, officers will be stationed at the bridges turning large trucks away.

Several thousand vehicles were stranded at both collapsed bridges from Monday night until this morning.
