Brit’s murder suspects escape to Cambodia, according to van driver

The two suspects in the murder case of a Brit in Pattaya may have fled to Cambodia, a witness told police yesterday.

Police received an important update on the murder case of Tony Kenway, a 39-year-old British national, who was shot dead outside a sports club in Pattaya on Tuesday.

Van driver, Lert Laimuenwai, 48, gave testimony to police that he was hired by the suspects, British man Miles Dicken Turner and South African man Abel Caldeira Bonito, to drive them to the Cambodian border.

Lert said the duo rented the van, and himself as the driver, for THB2,500 per day. He drove them from Trat to Pattaya on Jan. 19 and stayed in the tourist city for the entire length of the six-day rental agreement. During the rental time, Turner and Caldeira didn’t ask him to take them anywhere, though they did call to check in.

At 10:30am on Jan. 24, the day Kenway was shot, the suspects told Lert to drive them to the Thai-Cambodian border in Trat province. Turner shaved his beard on the way and tipped Lert THB5,000 when they arrived at the border.

Pol.Gen. Chalermkiat Srivorakan, Deputy Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police, told the media that they have contacted Cambodian authorities to seize the men. The motive is believed to be a conflict of interests in business, Sanook reported.
