Clinton Street Baking Company brings New York brunches to Bangkok

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — The famous New York brunch spot by chefs Neil Kleinberg and DeDe Lahman has opened in Bangkok, bringing their much-hyped pancakes that have been voted among the best in the world.

Located on the G floor of Siam Paragon, Clinton Street Baking Company offers American diner-style comfort food including: pancakes, chicken and waffles, buttermilk fried chicken, and burgers. Although the selection is pretty slim as the restaurant has just entered its soft-launch phase, they’ve got the highlights down pat.

Jariya Sawamiwas, the restaurant’s general manager, told us that the first Clinton Street Baking Company opened more than 15 years ago in New York. It was followed by locations in Tokyo, Dubai, and Singapore. Bangkok is the fifth branch in Asia. New York Magazine, Lonely Planet, and Condé Nast Traveller have all voted Clinton Street Baking Company’s pancakes as the best.

The original pancakes with warm maple syrup butter come in two sizes, a two-piece Short Stack (THB260) and a three-piece New York Stack (THB320). You can choose to top them with blueberry, banana walnut, or chocolate chips. The fluffy, buttery pancakes are slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. We chose blueberry, which combined just right with the sweet maple syrup butter.

For those who are not familiar with the famous American dish called chicken & waffles (THB320), it’s basically crispy fried chicken breast, seasoned with Tabasco honey sauce, paired with buttermilk waffles and maple syrup butter. For the black Angus cheeseburger (TBB450), a premium Angus ground beef patty is served with cheese and caramelized onions in a homemade bun with pickles, hand-cut potato wedges and coleslaw on the side.

“We use authentic Angus beef. Our chef keeps seasoning to a minimum so you can taste the meat. Our patties are not frozen; they are freshly ground by our butcher. Burgers at other places are heavily seasoned to cover the taste and smell of leftover meat, but ours taste of real meat,” said Jariya.

The manager added that before the opening, the Thai team worked closely with chef Neil and local suppliers for months to make sure that they had the best ingredients. Everything must be tested and approved by Neil. This way, you can rest assured that the food is made of premium-grade raw ingredients that taste great and are good for you.

Well, as good as fried chicken and waffles can be for you.
