Weekend Warrior: What to do this weekend in Bangkok – 1.11.2013

Welcome to Weekend Warrior, where we offer you a few ideas to kick-start your weekend of mayhem. Warriors, go forth.

Friday

Siam Center reopening party

As evidenced by our earlier coverage of Siam Center’s pre-opening hoopla, the flagship Bangkok mall has elected to go big, rather than going home. Bully for them and, dear consumer, for you as well.

On hand at Friday’s opening party will be works by Andy Warhol (the world’s foremost commentator on the conjoining of art and commerce), Leighton Meester from Gossip Girl and a store that sells insultingly appealing chocolate.

6pm. FREE (sort of). Siam Center, Thanon Rama I, Pathum Wan, Bangkok. Siam BTS stop.

Taste of Sukhumvit at the Ambassador Hotel

A plethora of dining options can sometimes suck the relaxing mood from a meal, but with an entry price as low as THB100, it’s hard to pass up this chance to sample the wares from 25 of Sukhumvit’s finer eateries.

5pm – 10pm, Jan. 12 -13. THB100. Ambassador Hotel, Sukhumvit 11, Khlong Tan Nuea, Vadhana, Bangkok. Nana BTS stop.

Saturday

The Vaccines at Moonstar Studios

These NME-endorsed, foppishly unshaven Brits are happily bearing the guitar-pop flag into the 20-teens. Check out our earlier write-up for the full shakedown, which includes music videos, testimonials and even more reasons why you should check out this quartet before it hops a flight back to the Isles.

6pm. THB1,400 advance, THB2,00 day of. Moonstar Studio, Lat Phrao Soi 80.

Just Blaze at Q Bar

If you’ve listened to hip-hop at all in the past decade, chances are you’ve heard a track by producer Just Blaze. His beats have shown up on albums from Kanye West, Jay-Z and (recent Coconuts Bangkok favorite) Kendrick Lamar.

This Friday, he mans the turntables at Q Bar.

10pm. THB600 (includes 2 drinks). Q Bar, Q Bar, 34 Sukhumvit Soi 11. Nana BTS stop.

Sunday

“Erotic Till the End of the World” at Artery Post-Modern Gallery

Vasan Sitthiket has some interesting ideas. While his belief that we are all born alone and die alone is nothing particularly special, his insistence on portraying this inevitability through erotic art does demand a curious double take.

10am – 6pm. FREE. Artery Post-Modern Gallery, 2/2 Silom Soi 19, Silom Rd,
Bangrak, Bangkok. Surasak BTS stop.

What? You’ve got a better idea? Leave it in the comments.
