A beach bar in Thonglor? Spot-On!

COCONUTS HOT SPOT – A beach bar in Bangkok? The idea has been done before. Le Fenix Hotel’s Nest Rooftop Bar & Lounge has parts of the floor covered in sand to give it a beachy feel. Then there’s Long Beach near RCA, which doesn’t have any sand but instead lots of water in the bathtubs… and every girl is cute but comes with a price tag. (Or at least that’s what we’ve been told.) The co-owner of Spot-On Beach Club & Lounge is cute too, but thankfully he doesn’t come with a price tag.

Co-owner William Scheffer comes from Monaco, where he came across a beach club within the city that everyone thought would flop. It actually became extremely successful so William decided to try out the concept in Bangkok, by creating a similar kind of beach-inspired bar right in the heart of Thonglor. It took him six months to find the current location in Thonglor soi 10. Today it’s just about ready to go public, but first they invited friends to try it out.

The vibe was pretty happening at the soft opening last night – it was packed with Bangkok’s young and trendy Thonglor clubbing crowd. We also came across some models who claimed they were bound by strict contracts that prohibited us from photographing them. Music was just alright that night, nothing that blew our minds or got our feet tapping.

Food and drinks were all on the house thanks to the generous owners who wanted to get feedback on their new venture… but there are definitely improvements to be made. For instance, they could’ve used crushed ice for the mojitos and other cocktails could’ve been less diluted. Overall, the drinks could’ve been more “spot-on.” After a round of cocktails we switched to the good ol’ reliable Heineken.

We did enjoy one of the finger foods though – the mini pork burger made with toasted soft buns, cheese, tomato, mayonnaise and quail eggs. We especially enjoyed the little umbrellas stuck in the buns (how cute!) and the glass fish tanks used as table tops. All part of the beach theme.

Spot-On is worth a visit just to drink and eat on top of your personal aquarium for the night. But the real selling point of the place is definitely its close proximity to nearby clubs like Muse, Demo, and Funky Villa, which are all within walking distance. It’s likely to become a popping pre-party venue for the Thonglor crowd. We’re just concerned about how high heels will survive at a place that’s designed for flip flops and bare feet. Spot-On is one of those places which you take a little bit from when you leave – the sand stuck in your shoes.
