Patent Wars: Green curry edition

Thailand’s Commerce Ministry is trying to assure that the recipe for gaeng kiew wan gai (chicken green curry) is patented as the Kingdom’s own invention.

The Commerce Ministry has reportedly caught wind that some American chefs may be trying to patent the dish as their own, which “may have a negative impact on the ownership of the original Thai food patent rights,” MCOT reported.

Consequently, the ministry has ordered the Intellectual Property as well as the International Trade Promotion Departments to follow up on patent applications. The MCOT article did not mention in which country they were trying to patent the curry.

Deputy Commerce Minister Poom Sarapol did admit that if a foreign chef creates a new and unique green curry recipe a patent could be acquired that wouldn’t threaten Thailand’s original one.

On the same day Mr Poom announced the details of how he plans to combat those who try to steal a curry synonymous with Thailand, he presided over a ceremony that saw 1.1 million pirated items of a THB1.8 billion destroyed. The pirated contraband included clothes, handbags and luggage, watches, shoes, auto parts, tablet computers, and personal notebooks.
