Of late, several people received a rude shock when their phone bills came packaged with various charges for purchases they did not make.

In a post, Singapore Police Force stated that many reports have surfaced regarding scammers befriending their victims on Facebook — with some even setting up accounts that resemble the victim’s friends.

When the request is accepted, the scammers proceed to phase two of their plan: asking for the victim’s phone number and mobile service provider, which they’ll use to purchase online gaming credits or gift cards. These purchases only went through when the victims provided the scammers with their One-Time-Password (OTP), blissfully unaware that their bank accounts were slowly bleeding out.

Of course, we’re not discrediting the threat of the standard surefire method of phone scams, so beware of that too, folks.
