A warning to tourists: Stay away from the monkeys

Authorities in Krabi have posted signs warning tourists to stay away from Thailand’s monkeys.

The signs, which read “Beware of Monkeys,” have been posted in Long Beach, Monkey Bay and Phi Phi Island.

The PR campaign was precipitated by a record number of monkey attacks that have plagued the region. According to Duangporn Paothong, director of Phi Phi Island Hospital, monkeys attacked over 600 people last year, 75% of whom were foreigners.

The Bangkok Post reports that so far this year, monkey attacks have befallen 50 tourists. Surprisingly, this is a vast, year-on-year improvement, which we suppose means that the signs are working.
