Airlines victorious in Don Mueang debacle

Airports of Thailand (AoT) has decided in favor of five airlines that earlier this week complained of unfair treatment and asked for the same incentives that their rivals were given to relocate to Don Mueang Airport as part of a strategy to ease congestion at Suvarnabhumi Internaitonal Airport.

A group of airline representatives yesterday managed to secure a deal that would see them receive the same incentives that 14 other airlines had already been granted.

AoT president Anirut Thanomkulbutra said the agreement was reached to provide equal privileges for airlines already operating out of the aging Don Mueang facility “for the sake of fairness,” the Bangkok Post reported.

Nok Air, Nok Mini (Siam General Aviation), Orient Thai, Solar Air and M Jet were earlier this week angered when they learned they would be excluded from the incentives. AoT’s reasoning for excluding the five was that they had only moved to Suvarnabhumi during the time Don Mueang was flooded, and that Nok Air and M Jet had already moved back.

The incentives the five airlines were peeved about missing out on included 10 to 95 percent discounts on aviation fees.
