Animal food factory exceeds stench limits

Actually, “exceeds” might be understating the problem. Inspectors from the Department of Pollution have found that an animal food processing plant in Nakhon Pathom is emitting a stench 20-times greater (!) than that allowed by local safety standards.

The inspectors were tipped off (curiously enough) not by the odor of the factory itself, but by the complaints of an abbot from the nearby Wat Or Noi. So great was the factory’s stench that the abbot had actually put his Wat up for sale.

According to the Bangkok Post, inspectors found that the odor intensity inside of the factory went as high as 7,000 units, far in excess of the legal limit of 300 units. The odor intensity at the factory’s fence was between 97 and 130 units. Factories located outside of industrial parks are supposed to have odors that don’t exceed 15 units at their fences, so this factory definitely has some work to do.
