BMA preparing for potential floods in Bangkok

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is preparing for possible flooding, as run-off from northern Thailand flows downriver.

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said on Saturday that flood prevention work – including dredging canals and building floodwalls – was currently underway.

Speaking at a seminar on water management, the governor said that canal dredging in 18-flood prone districts was 97% done and expected to be finished in August.

He added that BMA workers were also heightening and strengthening 77 kilometers of floodwalls along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, but that this task would most likely be completed next year.

The BMA is focusing on flood walls in the north of the capital – Bang Khen, Bang Sue, and Bang Phlat – where the most protection is needed, MCOT reported.

Uttaradit province in northern Thailand was hit by flash floods last weekend caused by incessant torrential downpours.
