Cops hand out free helmet padding to promote Songkran safety

In an effort to promote safe motorcycle riding during next month’s Songkran holiday, police have embarked on a campaign to hand out 500,000 padding linings for motorcycle helmets, free of charge.

This move represents part of Thai law enforcement’s multi-pronged effort to curtail alcohol-related deaths during Songkran.

In addition to banning the sale of alcohol at designated zones within Bangkok and surrounding provinces, law enforcement officials are pushing to ban the sale of alcohol in rural areas during the three days of the Songkran holiday in the hopes of preventing intoxicated motorcycle riders from venturing out for more booze.

The Nation reports that during previous Songkrans, most of the fatalities resulted from motorcycle riders who failed to wear helmets.

This year, perhaps helmet linings will encourage motorcycle riders to change this behavior. Then again, riding motorcycles without helmets has become something of a Bangkokian past time, so it’s hard to say.

If you’re interested in claiming one of these free helmet linings, head to a Thai police station, where cops will be handing them out.
