Disabled man detonates firecracker in front of parliament in plea for assistance

At 12am today, a disabled man detonated several firecrackers at a bus stop in front of the Thai parliament in an attempt to press the Supreme Court to reopen the assault case that had resulted in his disability.

Wittaya Luksanaphahu, a 35-year-old Pathum Thani native, came to the building on U-Thong Nai Road in the Dusit District this morning with a bag full of firecrackers. He lit six of them in an attempt to startle MPs, security guards and passersby while a parliamentary session was convening. He was later charged at the Dusit Police Station.

Wittaya said that he wanted to submit a complaint to the prime minister and MPs after the Court had dismissed a case in which he accused a suspect of severely assaulting him and causing his present handicap. Wittaya requested that either the case be reopened, or that he receive compensation from the government, claiming that his family was facing financial troubles following the assault.

According to Matichon, Wittaya was handed over to the Dusit Police for further interrogation. The explosion reportedly took place right before the prime minister was scheduled to travel to the building to attend a parliamentary session.
