Experts warn of Thai driving habits in wake of British couple’s death

Thai tourism authorities are on a crusade to remind the world that Thailand’s roads are indeed safe, following the death of two British cyclists who were hit by a truck and killed last week outside of Bangkok.

In an interview with the Nation, Assistant Professor Thaweesak Taekratok from the Crash Scene Investigation Project at Naresuan University said, “A handbook should be distributed to guide each [tourist to Thailand]. We have to warn them of the improper or risky driving behavior of Thai motorists, risky areas on roads and how rescue workers and medical officials assist with injuries.”

Ministry of Foreign Affairs deputy spokesman Chakkrit Sriwalee, who was also quoted in the article, said that the government was considering providing more English language signage on Thai roads, in order to help promote tourist safety.

Peter Root and Mary Thompson, the cyclists killed in the incident, had been on a worldwide cycling tour, which they documented on their website. A pickup truck driver in Chachoengsao struck them last week while they were cycling. The driver has subsequently been released on bail.
