Government pushes for infrastructure funding

The government announced that it will submit a bill to parliament requesting up to THB2 trillion over the next six months for investment in infrastructure projects such as increasing capacity at Laem Chabang deep sea port, Suvarnabhumi airport and Greater Bangkok’s mass transit system.

The government also hopes to disburse THB350 billion over the same period of time, which it mobilized by executive decree earlier this year for infrastructure projects, the Bangkok Post reported.

“This legislation to borrow the money will be pushed forward as a bill, rather than through an executive decree, although I think implementation of projects like upgrading Laem Chabang seaport must happen ugently,” Finance Minister Kittiratt Na Ranong said.

The government should sign construction contracts for some of the projects and quickly disburse the THB350 billion to improve irrigartion and flood management in the Chao Phraya River basin.
