Legalize It: Billionaire Dhanin calls for casinos in Thailand

Billioniare Dhanin Chearavanont, charman of Charoen Pokphand Group, has called on Thailand to legalize casinos to generate revenue and bring underground gambling out of the shadows.

“We should accept the truth. We already have underground businesses. They don’t pay tax and also build dark power. Why not legalize it. We should study Singapore’s case,” Bloomberg reported Mr. Dhanin saying.

Singapore overturned a ban on gambling in 2005, leading to billions of dollars in investment including Universal Studios theme park and a downtown convention center.

“If Thailand opens a casino, we will get more revenue than Macau,” Mr. Dhanin said.
