Paragliding Chinese tourist hung out to dry on light pole

A 44-year-old Chinese tourist was hung out to dry on a streetlight in a paragliding accident at Pattaya’s Jomtien Beach yesterday.

Officials who responded to the scene found the frightened tourist, Mr. Zhongping Bai, hanging off a 15-meter high light pole and shouting for help.

Rescuers used a vehicle’s extension ladder to free the man from the pole and bring him down safely. Thankfully, he wasn’t injured and suffered only a few scratches.

The boat that had been towing Zhongping, named “Surat,” was found anchored near the shore with no one on it. The driver apparently fled the scene.

The Chinese tourist “ran to hide on the side of the beach in shyness” upon being rescued, Pattaya Daily News reported.

This is the second paragliding accident involving a Chinese tourist this week. A few days ago, a 53-year-old Chinese man suffered a broken leg when his parachute descended too quickly.
