Thai academic research ‘below international standards’ says study

A study by the Thailand Research Fund has paradoxically called into question the quality of research conducted in Thailand.

According to the study, only 7% of the scientific and technological research papers published by Thai university professors qualify as “notably good” – an ambiguous category defined mostly by the quality of journals in which those research papers appear.

Professor Preeda Wibulsawas, in explaining the study’s results, mentioned that it also took into consideration university rankings from the Academic Rankings of World Universities, QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

In the opinion of all three of these institutions, Thailand’s university system lags behind its worldwide compatriots. To add insult to this injury, the three studies also said Thailand’s 34 universities lagged in terms of teaching ability, as well as quality of published research.
