We could be getting 3G from DTAC sooner than we thought

DTAC is shortening the timeline for installation of its next-generation, 3G network.

The Bangkok Post reported earlier today that Total Access Communications (DTAC) plans to invest THB25 million in building out its 2.1-gigahertz (3G) infrastructure with the goal of having all of its subscribers switched over to the new system by 2016.

What’s more, DTAC chief executive Jon Eddy Abdullah stated that his company would be able to offer 3G coverage to half the population by the end of next year, and 80% by 2015.

If DTAC sticks to this timeline, its 3G upgrades should outpace the deadlines set by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) by a full year.

Abdullah, in announcing the upgrades to DTAC’s coverage, also posited that Thailand’s gross domestic product would grow by one percentage point for every 10% increase in mobile penetration.

DTAC has plans to start upgrading its 2G base stations, as well as begin installation on 5,000 new base stations, within the next two weeks.
