Brooklyn woman writes Thai song about how she can’t speak Thai

Maggie Rosenberg claims that she doesn’t speak Thai, but a song recently uploaded to YouTube by the Brooklyn resident is causing local netizens to disagree.

Rosenberg’s single – “I don’t speak Thai (But I try!)” – has attracted a bevy of positive comments from Thai YouTube users. In the tune, Rosenberg makes the ironic claim that she doesn’t speak Thai, while laying down some nearly impeccable verses in the local dialect.

With ukulele in hand, the New York local kicks off the song with the most useful of questions for farangs: “Hong Nam Yoo Tee Nai,” she sings, or “Where is the bathroom?” Rosenberg then lays down a hook of, “I don’t speak Thai / But I try very hard / Because I want to be your friend.”

Comments by YouTube users so far include:

“You are way toooooooo adorable!! Your accent is quite good! Keep up with the good video and also with the study! You can do it! <3 <3” – sw3etd3vi1.

“your pronunciation is decent! 🙂 lovely song” – vadfun.

“I want to be your friend to ,you so cute i love u. And welcome to thailand. Land of smile :)))” – Peter Grey.

Rosenberg and her friend Hope Johnson have sung many Thai cover songs on their YouTube channel WeSingHappySongs, which they use to display their love for the Thai language. Check out her song below and learn some Thai phrases you can use when Thais ask if you can, Pood Pasa Thai.
