Holy Hula Record: 2,680 gyrate into Guinness Book in Bangkok

And now for something completely different: Thailand has set a new Guinness World Record for most people twirling hula hoops around their midsection at the same time.

On September 16th, exactly 3,000 people swirled their hula hoops at the Thai- Japan stadium in Bangkok in an attempt to steal the record previously held by Taiwan. Guinness representatives however, did not include people who dropped their hula hoops in the count, so the official number stood at 2,690. Taiwan’s earlier record was 2,497 hula hoopers.

Bangkok governor M.R. Sukhumphan Boripat opened the ceremonial start of the event, dubbed as “Bangkokian’s Power to Play Hula Hoops for Health.” The event was aimed at generating more interest in hula hoops.

Bureau of Culture, Sports and Tourism Director Manit Tacha-aphichoke, said participants from 50 districts signed up to join the activity. To set the new Guinness World Record, each of the 3,000 participants were required to use three different hula hoop techniques for 1.3 minutes each, the Pattaya Daily News reported.
