In today’s social media-embedded world, it’s getting harder to discern between what’s staged and what’s real, but many are finding it pretty easy to tell that this viral clip of a coffeeshop altercation seems fake.

First, some context. Local viral video purveyors Thelocalsociety and Singapore Uncensored both uploaded a clip that purportedly showed two men intimidating another man at a coffee shop along Upper Changi Road — the confrontation culminated in the two bullies beating up the victim. The dialogue in Malay is unclear in the video, but it seems like the bullies were demanding to know if the other dude was familiar with a particular person, and they assaulted him because they thought he was lying.

The altercation ended when another man stepped in to chase off the attackers, who fled from the scene soon after.

It’s not hard to see why some folks simply laughed off the incident as a staged one. The dude in the cap looked like he was simply play-kicking, while maroon-shirt bro looked like he was merely tousling the shirt of the victim. It doesn’t help that the unseen lady behind the video made obvious dialogue cues like, “Should we call somebody to help?”, “I’m so scared”, and “I think we better call the police”.

Some cursory digging revealed that the incident took place at 56 New Upper Changi Road — specifically, Adam’s Makan Place, a coffeeshop that hosts atas Halal joints. One of the stalls — the one that the red jersey intervener came from — is none other than the WORD. Food Truck, an expansion of the popular Muslim-owned cafe at Upper Thomson Road. We’ve reached out to the WORD. for their comments on the so-called fight.
