Human hair could help clean the Koh Samet oil spill

An absorbent made out of human hair and stockings called a ‘hair boom’ is being discussed as a realistic solution to minimizing the effects of the July 27 oil spill at Phrao Bay in Koh Samet.

Thai netizens are floating ideas on how to make the booms correctly and how to transport them to the island where PTT Global Chemical Plc (PTTGC) and the Navy are working on the cleanup operation.

Silpakorn University assistant professor Jittasak Putjorn wrote on his Facebook account this morning, asking for donations of hair and used stockings. Meanwhile, activist Porames Minsiri tweeted photos of a Creative Community Center in Ploenjit, designating it as the center for collecting hair booms.

The online movement was apparently inspired by the similar campaign of San Francisco-based environmental charity Matter of Trust during the US’s 2010 BP oil spill crisis.

Very little is known about who is primarily behind the campaigner is and if the method has really been proven effective. Neither PTTGC nor the Navy have agreed to use the donated hair booms. In the case of the BP spill, the hair donations were not used.
