Queue up: New temporary passport office to open in Bangkok

Travelers will be able to smile in their passport photo after all since it won’t take them six hours to get one.

A new temporary passport office will open at the Queen Sirikit Convention Center on Monday to increase convenience for citizens, who’ve recently had to endure long waits for a chance to apply, according to Thongchai Chasawath of the Dept. of Consular Affairs.

As the Chaeng Wattana Government Complex remains closed by anti-government protesters, thousands people have been gathering at the passport office at Central Bangna, forming a long line that stretches from the building all the way to Bangna road.

The new office will be located in the Lotus Room at the convention center, which is on Ratchadapisek Road near Rama IV Road, and will be able to issue 600 passports per day.

The Consular Affairs has negotiated with protesters to allow its technicians to enter government offices and activate the passport issuing system at other passport offices nationwide.

On Monday, all passport offices will connect to the system and be able to issue passports normally except at Chaeng Wattana and the provincial offices in Surat Thani and Phuket.

This will enable twice as many passports to be issued, up to 7,000 per day, Daily News reported.
