Best of Bangkok 2014: Nightlife!

Coconuts recently ran a reader’s survey to get an idea of your faves and raves, from parks and malls to nightclubs and restaurants. Your response was overwhelming.

Since then our massive research department got to work referencing norms, squaring Ts and seeking bribes to skew the results. So we fired them at great expense and just counted the votes by hand.

Today we continue to share the results with…The Best Nightlife of Bangkok 2014!

Much is made of tourism, rice, hard drives and frozen shrimp fueling Thailand’s economy. But we know the famed nighttime party scene is the unsung hero keeping the kingdom humming. A lot of diverging opinions on this one, but that’s a good thing – the diversity of options after dark is essential Bangkok.

1. Levels

Apparently a lot of you are going to Levels.

Whether you loved or hated Bed Supperclub, it’s long run on Sukhumvit Soi 11 established that area as a dancing and drinking scene for a generation of Thais and expats. Today that scene is dominated by Levels, just across the street and six floors up from Bed’s former location.

Owned by the same folks responsible for Q Bar and Bash, Levels could be called Zones for its many areas which give a different experience. There’s a deck garden area for lounging, chatting, and chain-smoking. The large, open main area has a central bar, crowded booths along the walls and a stage area for shaking that thing with notice. The music is fun – expect the same DJ-remixed takes on international dance hits unless there’s a special event. Some of you probably go there to push through all of  that crowd and beeline to the boom-boom room in the back, where a brilliant LED ceiling pulses to more beat-heavy dance music. All in all, you could do worse. Photo: Levels

2. Route 66

A lot of you are getting your kicks at Route 66. Whether you are a barely legal teen or a seasoned foreigner, you’ve probably ended up at what’s become the anchor club of the Royal City Avenue experience. When there isn’t a live act, the music ain’t that much different from other clubs, but the sodden crowd is always bumping with a fun vibe. Of course it’s a bucket-style joint, meaning there’s about two square meters of actual dance floor as everyone is crowded with their friends around a small table, replete with ice bucket and a bottle. Some are put off by the split-pricing: farangs must pay THB300 to enter the club, but it could be to keep away the patchouli vapors of the Khao Sarn backpacking crowd. Photo: Slim Sparrow

3. Glow Nightclub

It’s small, sweaty and there’s no velvet ropes here. But anyone who’s serious about delving into some sinister beats has found themselves at Glow. Frequently. It took years to take off, but the club continues to be a destination for Thais and expats looking to lose themselves in weirdness on the dance floor until the hours grow late. With its at-capacity crowds, we suppose it was inevitable the door’s gotten a little too expensive. Photo: Glow Nightclub
