Best of Bangkok 2014: Parks!

Coconuts recently reached out to the reputable polling firm of You and Some Other People Online to get an idea of your faves and raves, from parks and malls to nightclubs and restaurants. Your response was overwhelming.

Since then our massive research department got to work referencing norms, squaring Ts and seeking bribes to skew the results. So we fired them at great expense and just counted the votes by hand.

Today we will begin to share the results with …The Best Parks of Bangkok 2014!

Sometimes the eyes tire of vast, rain-stained concrete stretching past the horizon. Sometimes we want a twinkle of green to catch our breath, take a walk or paddle a duck boat. We offered 14 choices, but there was one clear winner.

1. Lumpini Park

Unsurprisingly, the 142 acres of Lumpini Park top the list, according to you. Not only can you explore its meandering paths and take a spin in that duck boat, but it’s a great place to enjoy a free workout with one of the groups that gather at dusk, arc through tai chi gestures at dawn, practice kendo or just stroll around watching others. We think it’s pretty great. After all, can Sunday strollers in paris or New York get close to amazing monitor lizards slipping in and out of its waterways?

2. Chatuchak Park

To the north, Chatuchak Park is an oasis of quiet adjacent to the popular market/zoo of the same name. More than 200,000 visitors hit the park each day to sit by its artificial lake. Come sunset, the picnicking families are replaced by relaxing workers and young couples filling every bench.

3. Benjasiri Park

Finally, east of the city center on Sukhumvit Road lies a relative newcomer Benjasiri Park, which came in third place. Popular with runners, Benjasiri’s manicured expanse includes a forest garden, playgrounds, basketball courts and swimming pools. It’s a place you can stop by on a given evening and join in impromptu groups doing everything from yoga to Brazilian Capoeira.
