Digital TV is here; promised vouchers are not

Digital TV is here, but don’t hold your breath for those promised vouchers.

A government subsidy intended to ease the pain of DTV adoption with THB690 coupons failed to win approval from broadcast regulators. It had been earlier announced the vouchers would go out to families this month when the digital broadcasts began.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission said a proposal could not be finalized for approval by its board tomorrow, Bangkok Post reported.

It was previously announced the coupons would be redeemable at Power Buy and 7-Eleven stores, however the commission’s lead broadcast regulator said the delaying the plan was necessary for the sake of transparency.

The commission may take the matter up again in another two to three months.

Digital TV is rolling out in three phases. The first phase saw digital broadcasts hit the urban centers of Bangkok, Nakhon Ratchasima, Chiang Mai and Songkhla earlier this month. Phase two will bring the service to Ubon Ratchathani, Surat Thani and Rayong by May 1. Finally, by June 1 it will expand to Sing Buri, Sukhothai, Khon Kaen and Udon Thani.
