A court has sentenced a truck driver who hit and killed a British couple while reaching down for his hat. For accidentally killing the couple, who were cycling around the world, he will be required to pay THB1,000.

Vorawong Sangkawat lost control of his truck in February of last year while retrieving a hat from the truck cab’s floor, according to police. He swerved onto the shoulder of a Chachoengsao province road and killed Peter Root and Mary Thompson, both 34, who were nearly two years into a global bike trek.

The driver was charged with negligence in the couple’s death, however a court handed down a suspended jail sentence and the fine, Daily Mail reported.
