Junta seeks free World Cup after court sides with rights holder

The military junta still wants all World Cup matches broadcast for free despite a court ruling against that yesterday.

The Supreme Administrative Court yesterday rejected an appeal by broadcast regulators seeking to compel RS International Broadcasting and Sport Management to show all matches on free television. Instead, customers who don’t pay for a set-top box will be able to watch 22 matches, including the first and last, on Channel 7 and 8. Brazil v Croatia, Mexico v Cameroon and Uruguay v Costa Rica will be among free matches, according to the Bangkok Post.

However, according to an Associated Press report, the military junta has pushed the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission to find a way to show all matches on free TV.

To that end, the commission today will consider using public funds to somehow obtain the right to air all matches.
