High speed rail project defunded but not dead yet

Although the military leadership has put the kibosh on tablets and rice subsidies, another ambitious initiative from the former government isn’t dead just yet.

Permanent secretary for transportation, Somchai Siriwattanachoke, said a decision on whether to proceed or kill the proposed high-speed rail system is on hold pending further study.

The rail project, estimated at THB800 billion, was dropped from the country’s planned infrastructure projects. However last week authorities approved THB3 trillion for infrastructure improvements, a 50 percent increase over the THB2 trillion approved by the senate in October.

Officials said the extra trillion would pay for aviation and water transport projects including a new seaport, airport expansions and new planes for Thai Airways International, Bangkok Post reported.

The report on the rail project is expected to be finished in September.
