2G not going away after junta shelves 4G

So remember all the warnings about the pending demise of 2G phone service? File under “exaggerated.”

As part of the domino effect of large projects canceled by the junta, state-run media reports that second-generation service will continue for another year instead of being retired in September as planned to make way for 4G service.

Auctions for licenses to offer 4G have been put on hold while the military reviews the plans.

This is good news for the six million True Move customers content to continue rocking 2G speeds at 1,800 MHz but a disappointment to those ready for widespread adoption of 4G.

With the junta’s move to cancel the August auctions, that 1,800-MHz portion of the spectrum can continue to be used for 2G.

This places a significant buden on some service providers – AIS reportedly faces significant monthly losses operating a network it says only serves 10,000 customers.
