Did it for mom: Disgraced Miss Universe runner-up says she posed for ailing parent

Political hate speech, penis tweets, and indelicate indiscretions this year’s Miss Universe Thailand contestants reached new lows in representing the pageant ideal. Or perhaps the ideal itself has become a victim of the times, losing its popularity to the more practical appeal of, say, being a flight attendant.

One of those fallen angels, Sunannika “Nampetch” Kritsanasuwan has admitted to the press she was indeed the girl shown in raunchy photographs released by an anonymous, online saboteur last month, Manager reports, but says she had a good reason.

“I feel sorry for what I did. Nobody looked out for me and screened what job I should accept. I was only 16 or 17 at the time, and my mother was sick,” Nampetch said. “As a daughter, I would do anything to cure her.”

Nampetch, 21, dismissed accusations made by whoever released the photos that they were linked to prostitution and said those days were behind her.

Since the photos were released, Nampetch’s status as second runner-up in the pageant seems unchanged. Her disclosures were made at a public event Friday.

The photos spread online in the wake of the pageant’s winner returning her crown in response to criticism for nasty comments she made and harsh criticism of her physique. After the images hit the internet, the pageant’s committee fell quiet, and Nampetch refused to talk about them.

“It’s me in the photos. I admitted to the Miss Universe Thailand committee that I accepted that kind of work, and the photos were part of a behind-the-scene shoot. I didn’t know which photographer leaked the photos,” Nampetch said.
