2 South Koreans lost at sea after high-speed boat collision

A marine rescue team resumed the search for two South Korean tourists this morning after they went missing last night following a speedboat accident that injured 32 passengers in the waters off Phuket.

The speedboat designated Sea Star 29 was reportedly carrying 37 passengers and five crew members when it collided with a fishing vessel yesterday afternoon about seven kilometers off the shore from Phuket. Two South Korean passengers were not found by rescuers.

The speedboat was reportedly returning to the pier at Boat Lagoon, a popular departure spot on Phuket Island after a day-trip to Phi Phi Island when the collision with the larger vessel took place at about 5:30pm.

Thirty-two people were injured including five crew members. Eight people escaped injury.

The marine police and rescue volunteers scoured the waters for the two missing Koreans. They have not been found as of this morning.

The police speculate the accident was caused by recklessness on the part of the speedboat captain, as the sea was calm at the time of accident. The captain will be detained for questioning, Phuket Wan reported.
