Police search for drive-by dog shooter

Police are looking for a motorist who casually shot a stray dog to death last week from a passing car last week at the urging of animal welfare organizations.

The Thai Animal Guardians Association on Friday delivered security camera footage to police to prosecute the suspected shooter, thought to be a teenager, under a new animal protection law with stiffer penalties.

Police said they could not identify the vehicle’s license plate from the clip and would seek additional CCTV footage to track it down.

In the video taken early Wednesday morning, several dogs approach and bark at a passing car outside a mall in the Lat Phrao district. The vehicle stops and the driver shoots a well-loved stray dog called “Silly” twice before driving away.

The footage incensed many online who saw no justification for shooting the dog after it was widely circulated online. Locals said the dogs were not aggressive and never bit anyone, according to Thai PBS.

Vendors at the mall pooled THB10,000 to take Silly to a veterinarian, but she died of her wounds. A funeral was held Thursday at Wat Bang Bua.
