Bad news for discerning readers: the International New York Times (INYT) has said it will stop printing in Thailand by the end of the year.

Marketing director Charlotte Gordon confirmed the move by the paper, which says it has become too expensive to print and distribute copies in Thailand.

The newspaper will still be available in other parts of Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Myanmar.

In September the INYT’s Thailand printer refused to print an edition of the paper that it said was “too sensitive to print”.

Thailand has been criticised for its restrictions on press freedom, dropping to 134th place in this year’s World Press Freedom Index.
