Bangkok Police set to fine careless gamers, become ‘catchers of Pokémon catchers’

Bangkok already had horrible road safety issues. It’s not surprising that the release of Pokémon Go has only made them worse. In response, the city’s police are now set to fine or even arrest gamers breaking safety laws.

A team of 50 police officers have been assembled to help flag down reckless pedestrians catching Pokémons on 10 of the busiest roads in Bangkok.

The officers have been armed with mobile phone cameras to get pictures of Pokémon trainers who play Pokémon Go on major roads in Bangkok. This team has been dubbed the “catchers of Pokémon catchers.”

According to Pol. Lt. Gen. Sanit, Sukhumvit, Phraya Thai, Rama I, Rama IV, Henri Dunant, Sathon, Phetchaburi, Phahon Yothin, Vibhavadi Rangsit, as well as the street circling Victory Monument will be made into no-play zones for Pokémon trainers due to the number of increasing road accidents related to the game, reported Bangkok Post.

Players who are caught engaging in risky behavior will be fined THB1,000. This includes people who play Pokémon Go while driving a vehicle, running on the street while catching Pokémons, or even walking while playing the game in an inappropriate manner. So now, if you find yourself in a standoff involving yourself, a policeman with a camera, and a Ditto on Sukhumvit, you’ll have to ask yourself — is it worth it?
