Dramatic helicopter rescue in rough seas off Phuket

A Cambodian cargo ship sunk in rough monsoon seas off Phuket yesterday morning but all 10 crew members were safely rescued by the Royal Thai Navy.

A Navy helicopter was able to save the seamen who were stranded on a lifeboat after the cargo ship Sinaran Andaman struck the rocks off Koh Hei and experienced engine failure.

The helicopter was called in after efforts by the Marine Police to rescue the men by boat failed as the waters were too choppy and dangerous close to the rocks.

After several successful airlifts to the helicopter, the crewmen – comprised of at least one Burmese, one Indonesian and several Cambodians – were transferred to the Marine Police boat Ploypailin.

All 10 crewmen are alive and well. They have been given immediate first aid and will receive further medical attention at Vachira Hospital after they have returned to Phuket at Ao Makham, Marine Police reported.
