As part of its ongoing campaign to rid the land of squat toilets, the Health Ministry has pointed out that Thailand’s most infamous plumbing fixture can lead to arthritis.
According to a statement from Deputy Health Minister Cholanan Srikaew, squat toilets not only lead to arthritis, but also pose a health risk to the obese and to pregnant women.
Under the Ministry’s Public Toilet Development Master Plan (such a thing exists, we assure you), Thailand is slated to switch over to 90% usage of Western-style toilets by 2016. At present, 86% of the Thailand’s toilets are of the squat variety.
