Thailand suicide rate rising

The number of suicides by Thai people reached a record high last year with over 3,800 people choosing to end their life, according to the Mental Health Department deputy director-general Dr Tawee Tangseri.

Last year, Thai teenagers aged between 15-19 committed suicide at a ratio of 3.43 per 100,000 of the population. More young Thai men commit suicide than Thai women of the same age, but Thai women are three times more likely to inflict harm on themselves compared to men.

852 teens committed suicide, at an average rate of about 170 per year from 2007 to 20011, Dr. Tawee said according to MCOT.
