How cold is it in the savage, northern reaches of the realm? Cold enough that two Chiang Mai districts have been declared winter disaster zones by the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.

Hypothermic hyperbole? That may depend on what you consider cold, but after five days of falling temperatures, residents in Omkoi and Chom Thong districts need help, according to department head Patcha Sadudee. The declaration allows the department “to provide financial assistance to cold victims,” according to state media.

Those serious about enjoying the downright frosty weather in the northern mountains are advised to bundle up.

Temperatures at Doi Inthanon Park have fallen to as low as 11C, with its summit sinking to 7C and other locations bottoming out at 3C, according  to park chief Pornthep Charoensuebsakul.
