Police find tearful lost backpacker in Chiang Mai woods

Tears gave way to smiles yesterday as a 22-year-old missing American backpacker was found by the police in the woods in Chiang Mai.

Shautal Chahine went for a walk in the woods at Doi Suthep-Pui National Park around 2pm, according to Thairath. Knowing she was on her own in the woods and could lose her way, she was using her phone’s GPS but, as her battery ran low and she couldn’t find her way back, she made one last frantic call to her friend in the city.

It was starting to get dark as the man called tourist police, who contacted park rangers to search the park.

They knew that the tourist could be scared and in danger, so they worked quickly and found her by 9pm near the temple in the park.

After being tearfully reunited with her friend at the police station, she posed for pictures with the police.
