Cadet’s father suspects foul play in son’s death

Investigators have blamed equipment failure in the deaths of two police cadets earlier this week, but one of their fathers said yesterday he suspects foul play.

Sathorn Putthachaiyong said he suspects conflict with another student was a factor in the death of his son, 19-year-old police cadet Chayakorn Putthachaiyong.

“On the first day of the parachute practice jump, my child died in the first group of jumpers,” he said. “Asking about the cause, everyone keeps telling me to wait for the results of an investigation. But I cannot help thinking that this was not an accident.”

He says another student who bullied his son had been punished for injuring Chayakorn during a hazing ritual. Sathorn said his family had been pressured to drop the charge against the other boy but refused to do so.

Chayakorn and cadet Natthawut Tirasuwansuk died when their parachutes failed to open during an exercise Monday, Bangkok Post reported.
