‘Capital punishment for rape cases’ man demands justice after ‘Nui’ spared

“I want capital punishment for rape cases,” read the cardboard worn by a man Monday, who stood outside a popular downtown mall Monday to send a message.

Days after a court spared the life of a serial killer who raped numerous children, the man’s solo protest in front of Siam Center succeeded in grabbing attention and provoking discussion online.

“I want to stand up for my point of view,” he said when asked the motivation for his demand for justice. “I feel that the criminals who face the death sentence always get their punishment reduced to life imprisonment. As they stay in prison, their years are decreased, and they finally get released and start acting out again like the man who killed Cartoon. It’s not right.”

The unidentified man was referring to the 4-year-old girl killed last year in Bangkok by a mentally ill drifter named “Nui,” who raped and murdered several others after being released from prison on a prior conviction.

He said the release of prisoners should be done carefully, and those eligible for release should be given psychological tests to insure they will not commit more crimes.

His story on Facebook has received more than 52,000 likes and supportive comments from netizens who praise the man’s courage to demand change in society.
