Miss Universe runner-up refuses to hand back her tiara

Again the cultural event to find the finest examples of Thai beauty proves the most reliable source of scandal.

Sunannika “Nampetch” Kritsanasuwan, second runner up to Miss Universe Thailand, announced this afternoon that despite a pageant committee decision to strip her of her title, she remains innocent of nasty accusations, still expects to be paid and won’t surrender her tiara.

As pageants are restricted, good girl-only zones, a series of raunchy photos last month showing Nampetch posed suggestively ‒ along with an anonymous accusation she worked as a prostitute ‒ led the committee to announce they’d dropped Nampetch earlier this month.

She previously said she’d worked as a “pretty” model to help pay for her mother’s medical treatment.

“I think pretties make businesses successful, and it’s a prestigious occupation also,” Nampetch defended herself. “About the sexy photos, I didn’t even know it’d turn out that way. I’d like to apologize to the pageant fans.”

Nampetch today denied again that she traded sex for money.

“I was only 17, a high-school junior,” she said. “I wasn’t a prostitute or anyone’s mistress. Anyone with proof that I was a prostitute is welcome to expose me. My mom had a dangerous cell in her uterus. Her operation was urgent, and I had to start my pretty job.”

She said there was nothing illegal about what she did and doesn’t believe it should have disqualified her.

“I feel sorry that a pretty cannot compete in a pageant contest,” she added.

At the news conference, she even produced her mother’s medical documents to support her statement.

“Today I brought you the documents to prove the she was really sick. The leaked photos of me in the car happened because I wanted to earn more money for her, but I insist I wasn’t a prostitute.”

Regarding her now non-existent Miss Universe title, Nampetch says she doesn’t understand why the committee kicked her out, but kept Ellie, the first runner-up. Photos of Ellie kissing her boyfriend also ended up online.

“The committee talked to the admins of my hater club and did not hear me out,” she said, “They unfairly ditched me and tried to force me to resign on my own. I accept their decision, but I want to know why they ditched me. So, Ellie kissed a boy. Why wasn’t she fired?”

Lastly, Nampetch insisted she is not handing back that jeweled tiara and still expects to be paid.

“I’m not giving up my tiara, but I will give back the title and sash,” she said. “Also, I’d like to ask the committee a question: when are you going to pay me my reward of THB 200,000?”
