MICT refuses to drop banhammer on websites linked to homework services

As services offering to do homework for students in exchange for their small allowance flood the internet, the Ministry of Education’s request for a blanket ban has been denied by nation’s watchers on the digital wall.

After finding about 1.5 million links related to homework services, education officials were told by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology it would not block sites without a police report from citizens.

Searching Google with various “homework services” keywords such as research, thesis and report writing services, turned up some 1.5 million results, prompting the mass-blocking request from education permanent minister Sutthasi Wongsamarn.

But despite its reputation as a willing censor, MICT cited a need for due process, saying it won’t take action until someone first files a complaint with police and a site is found guilty of violating the Computer Crimes Act, Morning News reported.

Just how could a homework service site break the cybercrime law? By taking students’ money and not doing their homework for them.

The homework services came under scrutiny last month when a famous tutor known as “Kru Tom” publicized an Instagram account which promised to complete any kind of homework for only THB200.
