Serial rape-murder suspect released after DNA fails to match

Royal Thai Police have released a suspect they had detained over the rape and murder of women in Bangkok’s surrounding provinces after his DNA failed to match with any of the victims.

Tawan Tongyim, 35, a Nakhon Pathom state worker, confessed to the 10 crimes when he was detained and questioned by police yesterday because he looks similar to the man in the composite sketch.

However, Royal Thai Police spokesman Prawut Thawornsiri said this morning that Tawan’s DNA did not match with the victims and he assumed Tawan confessed because he was terrified.

The rapist, who has not been identified, has assaulted 10 women, aged between 39 and 70, in Bangkok’s outskirts during the past four years. He also murdered two of his victims in Nakhon Pathom and Samut Songkram.

Police have encouraged residents to be alert as the rapist is still on the loose. Police have described the man as a Thai male, aged 30-40, medium-build, muscular, 170cm tall, with large feet and large killer hands, Post Today reported.
