Line tempts users to skip out on Skype with new calling service

Line continues to find new ways to squeeze spare satang from its loyal fans here in the kingdom.

“Line Call” is the popular chat app’s newest service and allows users to make domestic and international call direct to landlines and mobile numbers inexpensively.

The service has launched for Android devices in eight countries: Japan, United States, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Philippines, Spain and Thailand. Versions for iOS and Windows phones are coming soon.

The fees vary in each country but use one of those deceptive “credit” systems instead of simply giving a price. In Thailand, calls are charged on a per-minute basis with calls to landline costing three “credits” (~1THB) and four credits (~THB1.3) for mobile numbers. Payment can be made by cash, credit card, True Money, AIS cash cards and Line coins (Android users only).

Line is also selling 30-day plans for heavy users.
