Thailand prepares for possible Ebola outbreak

Both an international travel nexus and destination, Bangkok is on high alert for a possible Ebola outbreak.

Health officials have been tasked with making plans to deal with any incidents of infection, and travelers are being screened at nine areas such as Suvarnabhumi Airport, sea ports and border crossings, according to state-run media.

Education campaigns have been launched to provide the public with knowledge and information about the virus. Meanwhile the foreign ministry has discouraged nonessential travel to West Africa.

The government has approved funds to send medical and health personnel to provide aid in West Africa, along with other financial and material assistance from the government, Thai Red Cross Society and the private sector.

Ebola can only be transmitted by direct contact with infected bodily fluids.

It incubates for two to 21 days before symptoms show. Early symptoms include sudden fever, weakness, muscle pain, headaches and sore throat. These symptoms can appear between 2 to 21 days after infection.
